The Best Self Esteem Test
Have you ever wanted to take a self esteem test? I’ve done a bit of legwork for you and scoured the internet to find different options and try them out. In each section below I tell you about the test, let you know how I scored, and share my thoughts about whether you should take the test too.
Psychology Today Self Esteem Test
The Psychology Today Self Esteem Test took me about 5 minutes to complete, although the website says it can take up to 15 minutes. It involves choosing radio buttons for 34 questions with the response that corresponds to each item.
After I completed the test, I received a free snapshot report with my score (46) for the Ability to Deal with Rejection. It also provided a paragraph describing what the scores mean as well as some brief suggestions on how to improve it.
If I paid an additional $6.95, it would unlock the following sections: Into, Graphs, Detailed Results, Strengths and Limitations, and Advice. To entice me to do this, the test showed me my score on Sense of Self Efficacy, which was 65.
Anxiety Centre Self Esteem Test
The Anxiety Centre Self Esteem Test took me only a few minutes to complete as it is only 10 questions long. Some of the questions seemed to ask more about social anxiety than self esteem, such as one about feeling nervous talking to people in authority. The final question on the test asked outright what I thought my level of self esteem was.
My score on the test was 49 indicating moderate issues with self esteem that could contribute to anxious behavior. The results indicate that a score in this range could contribute to struggling in social and performance situations, so as I suspected, this test is focused on social anxiety-related self esteem.
However, it then mentions that behavior causes anxiety, and that anxiety is not caused be chemical imbalances, biological issues, or genetics. I have to take issue with this statement, since we know these can indeed contribute to anxiety. For this reason, and given that the test is quite short, I don’t recommend taking this test.
Psych Tests Self Esteem Test
I soon discovered that the Psych Tests Self Esteem Test is identical to the one at Psychology Today. So… this test is not owned by either of these sites, but rather by another company (called ARCH Profile). So, you could choose to take the test through Psychology Today or Psych Tests, but don’t do both!
Psycom Low Self Esteem Test
The Psycom Low Self Esteem Test is only 8 questions long and took me a few minutes to complete. The questions seem to focus on various areas of self esteem. When submitting my answers, it asked for my email address, but I did not provide it to check whether this was required. It was not, and I immediately accessed the results screen.
My results showed that I had a mild indication of low self esteem, which seemed to correspond to the answers I gave on the test. The test results remind me that the test is not a substitute for talking with a health care professional.
Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale
You can access a free online version of the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. The Rosenberg Scale is a widely used (over one hundred projects) measure of self esteem in research studies, but it is not meant to be used to diagnose psychological issues.
The test asks you to rate ten statements in terms of how much you agree with them. You should also note that your answers are being recorded for a research project. However, clearly your data would be anonymous. Also, note that you can elect not to have your answers recorded for research before you submit them.
My score was 18/30. A score below 15 is said to indicate low self esteem. You are also provided a graph showing how most other people score on this test.
I have to say, this is my favorite test of all the ones I looked at. It has clearly been validated since it’s being used in research, whereas it’s not clear how the others were developed and how rigorously they’ve been tested.
I also felt like this test was the most accurate and objective. It didn’t focus only on social situations, and there was no “neutral” answer. Instead, I was forced to pick a positive or negative answer. And when I forced to pick, I tended to pick positive.
