How to Manifest Social Confidence and Let Go of Social Anxiety
Are you wondering how to apply the law of attraction? Do you think it could help your social anxiety? If you’re not the type to go for this type of stuff, just hear me out. I promise I will take a completely scientific stance on what is clearly an unscientific realm.
Make sense? Probably not. But let’s dive in on how to apply the law of attraction..
I’ll be completely honest: I haven’t read the book The Secret. It’s on my list. Along with a lot of other books. Actually, I recently signed up for a Scribd account, and since then I’ve been listening to books like crazy.
It’s amazing if you haven’t heard of it. Unlimited audiobooks (plus some pdfs of books) for less than $10/month. And, if you sign up through my link you’ll receive 2 months of free reading. You could listen to a lot of books in those two months! They have a ton of self-help books including lots on social anxiety.
Anyway, back to how to apply the law of attraction. So, I’m not really into that stuff. I haven’t read the books or practiced trying to manifest what I desire into my life. But recently, I was pointed in the direction of Jen Sincero’s book You Are a Badass at Making Money.
And yes, it’s a book about money. But, the principles in the book on how to apply the law of attraction could be applied to any topic. One chapter stood out to me so far, and it’s the one about the language that we use and the words that we choose.
Jen talks about phrases to watch out for that signal to your brain that you are lacking in some way, and the phrases you can use instead that signal to your brain that you already have (and already are) enough. Or, that you’re confident everything will come to you when you need it.
So here they are.
Negative Self Talk
Phrases to watch out for (according to Jen):
“I want”: This is seen as the equivalent of saying “I lack.”
“I wish”: The same as saying I’m not in control, which is disempowering.
“I need”: Reminds you that you don’t have something, or are lacking.
“I can’t”: This one’s obvious.
“I’m trying”: This means you are not really committed.
“I hope”: Shows that you don’t truly believe something will happen; it might or it might not.
“I should”: Emphasis is that you might not do it and probably don’t want to.
“I don’t know”: Stops you from finding out.
“I know”: Implies there’s nothing left to learn.
Law of Attraction Words
And, here are her replacements:
“I’m grateful for”
You get the idea. Your language, words, and phrases should reflect abundance and positivity rather than lack, frustration, and inaction. And I think these can be applied to social anxiety too.
Anxious Self Talk
How many times have you said these things?
“I want to be more confident.”
“I wish I had more friends.”
“I need to say the right things.”
“I can’t go to the store by myself.”
“I’m trying to overcome social anxiety.”
“I hope people like me.”
“I should be farther in my life by now.”
Confident Self Talk
What could you replace them with?
“I have people who love me.”
“I create the life I want.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunities I have.”
“I enjoy spending time with like-minded people.”
“I can be confident around some people.”
“I choose not to worry what other people think of me.”
“I love myself just as I am.”
So, what I’d like you to do is just watch how you talk to yourself and other people for the next month. Be very aware of the words that you choose, as well as the words that people around you choose, because often they are a mirror for you as well.
Each time you catch yourself using one of the words above (want, wish, need, can’t, trying, hope, should, don’t know, know) see if you can replace it with one of the better words (have, create, grateful for, enjoy, can, choose, love). Do you see the difference?
If you need to, write down both sets of words on an index card and put them in your purse or wallet so you don’t forget. Let me know if you notice how shifting your language helps to shift your mindset as well.
