11 Tips to Help You Improve Yourself Every Day
If you don’t know how to improve yourself every day, you probably feel stuck. If you live with social anxiety, this might mean avoiding social or performance situations out of fear, not because you don’t want to participate. Changing your life takes dedication and getting out there. If you wait until you feel like it, you will never feel like it.
Overcome your social anxiety by improving your life overall. When you start to feel better about yourself, it will be easier to enter those situations that you feel are causing you social anxiety. Below are some tips to get you started.
Write down 5 things you are grateful for each day. Make a list of things you enjoy doing. Try to do at least one each day.
Use Positive Affirmations
Keep a log of negative things you say to yourself for an entire day. Once you are aware of your negative thoughts, begin to change them to positive affirmations. Do this consistently until the positive thoughts come more naturally.
Always Be Learning
You don’t have to go back to school to be a life-long learner. Make a commitment to yourself to learn at least one new thing each day. Your local library is an excellent resource for this quest.
Seriously, for a whole day, make a point of not complaining once. If you catch yourself complaining, toss a dime in a jar. Gradually, you should catch yourself before you even start. (Donate the money in the jar to a worthy cause during the holidays)
Set a Budget
I use Mint.com. Getting control of your finances will help you to improve yourself every day all areas of your life. More control of your finances = less stress = less anxiety.
Track Your Problems (And Find Solutions)
Write down every problem you encounter for one entire day. Figure out solutions to fix or prevent those problems in the future. You will probably notice problems that you face repeatedly but never solve. Start making changes that make your life easier.
Hit Your Goal Weight
Perhaps a weight you remember being comfortable at in the past, or your ideal weight based on a BMI calculator. Set a goal to weigh that much by a specific date. Lose weight at a rate of 1–2 pounds per week to get there. Get there by eating an allotted number of calories, and finding other things in life that bring you joy other than food. Collect a “calorie bank.” Generally, eat less so that once in a while you can eat more.
Move Your Body
Even if it’s just a walk around the block, get moving. Exercise releases endorphins, which are helpful for managing anxiety and mood issues.
Find People Interesting
Try to learn something from each person you talk to. Imagine each person has something to teach you. This will lead to the most enriching conversations you’ve ever had.
Always try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Get out of your own mind and start to imagine what other people are feeling (not what they are thinking about you). If you can truly take the perspective of other people, you won’t have any use for social anxiety anymore (because you will no longer be worrying about their perception of you).
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Comparison only steals your happiness. Especially on social media, don’t compare. Remember that everyone wants to portray themselves in the most positive way possible on Facebook and Instagram.
Improving your life involves making small changes every day that move you in a positive direction. If you can’t imagine the life you want, start by visualizing the most ideal version of yourself possible.
What would that person want out of life? What career would that person have, how would she go about her day, and what would her hobbies be? If you can tap into the “alter ego” version of yourself, you’ll be one step closer to making the improvements that will help you to live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
