Using CBD Oil for Anxiety

Below are eight facts about using CBD oil for social anxiety (or other mental health issues).
CBD Oil Derived From Hemp Won’t Make You High
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is extracted from the hemp plant.
Traditional marijuana contains the compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while CBD oil only contains trace amounts.
THC is a psychoactive substance responsible for the “high” experienced when marijuana is smoked or ingested.
On the other hand, CBD oil is not psychoactive, meaning that it does not alter your state of consciousness.
There Are No Dosage Guidelines for CBD Oil – But You’re Probably Not Taking Enough
CBD is usually used as an oil, though it can also be smoked or vaporized. It can also be used as a spray, or topically as a massage oil.
Because the oil is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is no universal information on dosing.
Most research studies on anxiety report doses of 300 mg to 600 mg, which is a lot higher than the doses available in typical CBD oil products.
If you choose to purchase and use CBD oil for social anxiety, see if your doctor can give any advice on a dose based on existing research.
CBD Helps You Use Your Own Cannabinoid Receptors
CBD oil does not have mind-altering effects. However, it may have an indirect effect on your mind which can lead to changes in your body.
CBD oil allows your body to use more of its own cannabinoids by attaching themselves to receptors in your body.
Everyone has two receptors for cannabinoids: CB1 and CB2.
CB1 is found in the body and brain and relates to coordination, movement, appetite, memory, pain, mood, thoughts, and emotions.
CB2 is common in the immune system and primarily affects pain and inflammation.
Hemp-Based Oil and Marijuana-Derived Oil Are Not the Same
Did you know that there are two types of CBD oil on the market? One comes from hemp and the other from marijuana.
Marijuana is the bud of the plant and contains psychoactive properties, while hemp is the stalk and leaves and does not contain enough THC to make you high.
For cannabis to be classified as hemp, it must not contain more than 0.3% THC.
In contrast, CBD oil made from marijuana can have up to 20% THC.
What You Can Buy Depends on Where You Live
Whether or not CBD oil (the one made from marijuana) is legal for you to use depends on where you live.
Remember though, if the CBD oil you purchase is made from hemp, it is legal no matter which state you live in.
In the United States:
If you live in one of the following 10 states (plus Washington D.C.), you can legally use CBD that comes from marijuana for any reason:
- Washington, D.C.
There are an additional 23 states where CBD oil made from cannabis is legal with a doctor’s prescription:
- New Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- West Virginia
In addition, 14 states have limited-access laws that allow CBD oil from cannabis as long as the THC content falls under a certain level. This means that there are certain qualifying conditions for use.
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
Finally, in the following four states, CBD oil derived from cannabis is completely illegal to use:
- South Dakota
At the same time, the Federal government still classifies marijuana-derived CBD oil as a Schedule 1 substance. This is the DEA’s most restricted category making it not legal for any use.
However, it isn’t likely that CBD-oil users for medical conditions will be prosecuted by the Federal government.
CBD oil became legal in Canada with the introduction of The Cannabis Act in October 2018.
One Small Study Showed CBD Oil Helped Reduce Public Speaking Anxiety
We know that more research is needed on the effectiveness and efficacy of CBD oil.
So far, only animal research or small short-term studies exist. However, there are some promising findings.
In addition, a 2015 review study suggested that there was good pre-clinical evidence for the use of CBD oil in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
However, evidence supports the use of CBD in the short term, such as to treat a specific anxiety attack or prepare for a situation, rather than over the long term.
CBD Oil Is Not Regulated—But Is Relatively Safe to Use
CBD oil is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so in many ways using it is like taking a natural supplement.
There is no guarantee about what is contained in the product you purchase as it is not regulated like pharmaceuticals.
There are also no Federal regulations about dosing or universally accepted guidelines on the best way to use it.
At the same time, we know that CBD oil is not likely to be addictive and there is no risk of overdose.
