The best essential oils for social anxiety have a sedative effect, such as lavender and chamomile. Essential oils are used as part of aromatherapy, which is a natural treatment for anxiety.
Aromatherapy isn’t just some crazy fad either—there is some research evidence to support its effectiveness for issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. In a small study conducted in 2014, a 4-week program of aromatherapy with older adults with chronic pain was shown to alleviate their emotional symptoms such as those mentioned above.
Essential oils are created from plant sources such as roots, seeds, leaves, and flowers of various plants. If you are experiencing anxiety related to social and performance situations, essential oils can help you to feel calm and relaxed.
While they aren’t likely to stop a panic attack, they could help you fall asleep at night and relax when you’re out in public. As well, if you use these them repeatedly over time, eventually your brain will naturally associate the scent with feeling relaxed.
As far as their safety, essential oils are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means that there are no standards for testing and no guarantee about the safety or ingredients of what you buy. In other words, you’re on your own to pick a company you trust to sell you the highest grade essential oils.
To use essential oils, you will either put them directly on your skin (put five drops in your bath), inhale them directly (from a tissue, bracelet, or necklace), or spread them in a mist (using an oil burner or diffuser). You could also use essential oils as part of massage.
When you purchase essential oils they are in a concentrated form and will need to be diluted for use. For example, to use on your skin, you would dilute oils with a carrier oil like sweet almond oil) and use about 5 drops to 10 ml of the oil.
Let’s take a look at the different essential oils and which ones you might choose if you have social anxiety.
Essential oils may be sedatives (calming) and/or nervines (boost your nervous system) that help to calm you down or give you energy. Below are the different sedating and energizing essential oils and their potential uses.
